A North Carolina native, Dr. Coward is a urologic microsurgeon specialized in the treatment of male fertility. He received his MD with Distinction from UNC and completed his internship in General Surgery and residency training in Urology at UNC. Board certified by the American Board of Urology, Dr. Coward joined UNC Fertility in 2013 after completing a microsurgical fellowship in Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston with Dr. Larry Lipshultz. He is currently the Director of Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at UNC Fertility, and he is the Fellowship Director for the UNC Men’s Health Fellowship which provides training for future leaders in male fertility treatment.

Dr. Coward has been consecutively named to the prestigious 2015-16 and 2017-2018 Best Doctors in America ® lists, a distinction achieved by less than 5 percent of the physicians in the United States. He has also been the recipient of numerous academic awards throughout his career including Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Coward has published dozens of scientific journal articles and textbook chapters, and he regularly presents his research at national meetings. He is an investigator on the UNC Fertility team of physicians that works with the Reproductive Medicine Network, an important NIH-funded group of centers of excellence that carries out multicenter clinical trials of male and female infertility.

Full diagnostic and treatment services for men offered on-site at UNC Fertility by Dr. Coward include advanced semen studies performed in UNC Fertility’s andrology lab, hormone and genetic laboratory evaluations, diagnostic ultrasound, sperm cryopreservation, and sperm retrieval. In the on-site procedure suite at UNC Fertility outfitted with an operating microscope, using deep sedation by a board certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Coward offers the entire array of sperm extraction procedures available, including testicular biopsy, testicular sperm extraction (TESE), microdissection testicular sperm extraction (micro-TESE), testicular sperm aspiration (TESA), minimally invasive epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA), and electroejaculation. He also performs in the office the most minimally invasive form of vasectomy currently available, known as the no-scalpel, no-needle vasectomy.
